Faster, simpler and more robust are the three motivations shaping the world, and the Web is the primary tool. As a result, social media is a growing form of communication worldwide. Recall recent conflicts in the Middle East. Within minutes of occurrences, Twitter was flooded with updates from insiders and the entire world was aware.

I personally use social networking websites every day to communicate with my friends on Facebook, browsing around and reviewing updates on their statuses. On Facebook, I also “like” certain business’ profiles. Once in a while they will offer special promotions and update me on the latest products and services.

While social media for personal and entertainment purposes has become main stream, social media for business purposes is still in its infantile stages. At this point, businesses have realized their buyers, like me, are on social media and this is not going to change any time soon. They’re wondering, however, how to get the most out of it and how to tie it to revenue. I don’t think any one person has definite answers to this question yet.

So, for now we can still refer to social media as the modern-day science experiment and start taking baby steps. After all, we know a social media presence:

  • Makes you more attractive to search engines, boosting your SEO
  • Allows you to interact with targeted buyers
  • Drives website traffic
  • Increases leads
  • Builds trust with buyers
  • Makes marketing more cost effective

Social media is here to stay and you can bet it will continue to get more advanced, making communications faster, simpler and more robust.
