Today, companies are challenged with generating everything bigger, faster and stronger, with a significantly lower budget than what was available to rebuild Lee Majors, the ‘70s’ six-million-dollar man.

Social media is a modern-day science experiment. Facebook alone has more than 900 million ways to connect with your target audience. Regardless of the company, Facebook’s new iFrames should be in your concoction for bigger, faster and stronger social media activity.

iFrames Give You More Freedom

An iFrame is simply a method of displaying one Web page within another, similar to your picture-in-picture function on a modern television. It allows you to build an entire website to be displayed within your Facebook page. All technology and creative expression available to a web designer/developer for a normal website is now available on your Facebook page.

As a Web designer/developer, I’m excited about iFrames because I can work in an environment that I’m familiar with, controlling the CSS, fonts and content, along with our own site analytics. As a business, we have more control over what we present to our visitors and can update it as needed.  Features implemented with the Facebook API allow you to create more interactive content for your visitors.

You Will Need a Dedicated Web Developer

iFrames open the doors to the mad scientists, but freedom has it costs. If you are going to use iFrames, you must have a dedicated developer. For example, fan-gating, which allows you to display unique content to fans and non-fans, requires an experienced Web developer to build that functionality into the Web pages destined for Facebook.

For those new to the process, the good people at HyperArts have created a helpful step-by-step blog on how to create an iFrame-based app for your facebook page.

If you’re researching this topic, you should be aware that any existing Facebook app built using FBML will remain active and functional, but you are unable to create any new applications using that method. That means if you’re starting from scratch, you’ll need to use the new iFrame method.
